“PROFESSOR ALLEN,” JEN spoke quietly into her cell phone. “I told you we were in Roanoke at the interpretive center. Avery found some old journals. Supposedly they belonged to Elinor Dare. I think you should see them. You might change your mind about her project. It’s hard to explain how she found them, but these journals she found are written by the daughter of the Roanoke governor. Please call me back.”

Avery stepped out of the bathroom of the tiny copy shop and met Jen in the hall as she was hanging up her phone. “Who was that?”

Jen answered quickly, “Oh, got a voice mail. Nothing important.”

“Are you starved? Let’s get these originals to the hotel safe, and then we can meet Ethan for dinner. I’m dying to get a look at the copies.”

“Yes, let’s go. Hey, Avery? What do you think of Ethan?”

Avery tried to ignore the ridiculous grin on Jen’s face. “He’s nice. I’m so glad that he is helping us. We wouldn’t have been able to get into the store room without him.”

“Yes,” Jen said, the impatience evident in her voice, “but what else? I’m pretty sure he has got a thing for you.”

They walked toward the car as Avery tried hard not to think about Ethan. She tried to ignore the way her stomach had felt butterflies when he had agreed to go to dinner with them.

“Oh, Jen. You are always trying to set me up with somebody. Not this time. I’ve got work to do and a short deadline to get it done. First, let’s eat, okay?”
